Expertise
These motifs are “kalam Kari”, a term that designates both a style and an ancient printing technique involving the application of colors using hand-carved wooden blocks - formerly called styli. There are as many blocks as there are colors, but all the colors are made from natural pigments - pomegranate, seeds, etc. - that have been fermented. Applied using the blocks - which function like stamps - these colors are only revealed when the fabric is washed in river water. The fabric then dries in the sun. Depending on the quality of the water - which must be “neither too sweet nor not sweet enough”, they say - the intensity of the sun, the season - monsoon or not - the pattern will be different. It's a skill that has been handed down from generation to generation. Today, it's Nanni who orchestrates the workshops, Nanni who gave up his studies in computer engineering to take over from his father a few years ago. Nanni fights to ensure that this know-how remains intact and endures.
