These motifs are “kalam Kari”, a term that designates both a style and an ancient printing technique involving the application of colors using hand-carved wooden blocks - formerly called styli. There are as many blocks as there are colors, but all the colors are made from natural pigments - pomegranate, seeds, etc. - that have been fermented. Applied using the blocks - which function like stamps - these colors are only revealed when the fabric is washed in river water. The fabric then dries in the sun.
